AI Commercials: How They're Made and When They Beat a Shoot

October 22, 2026

An AI commercial is a video ad where the scenes are generated by AI video models instead of filmed. Everything else works like a traditional commercial: someone writes a story, casts it, plans every shot and edits the result. The camera is the only thing that is replaced.

Done well, it looks like a spot shot on set. Done badly, it looks like a slideshow of strange faces. The difference is almost entirely in the process, so here is how a good one gets made.

How an AI commercial is made, step by step

  1. The story comes first. Product, audience, the feeling you want and the final line. You approve the script before anything is generated.
  2. Everything gets locked as a reference. Every person, place and product becomes an approved reference image: character sheets, empty locations and the hero product with every detail spelled out. This is what keeps your bottle, your storefront or your spokesperson identical from the first shot to the last.
  3. Each scene is written like a shooting script. Lens and camera position, timing, light, movement and sound, plus the rules that must never change, such as "the label always faces camera" or "hands stay empty."
  4. Several takes, then the keepers. Each scene is generated several times on today's leading video models, tested cheaply in draft, and only the best takes are finished in full resolution.
  5. The edit makes it a commercial. Music, sound design, titles and your logo go on in the edit, then the spot is reframed for every screen: widescreen for TV and YouTube, vertical for Reels and TikTok.

When an AI commercial beats a shoot

  • The scene is expensive to film. A desert road at golden hour, a crowded restaurant, a rooftop at night, a product in ten different settings. AI needs no permits, no travel and no crew.
  • You need versions. Because every scene is made separately, a seasonal ending, a different offer or a second opening comes from the same story.
  • You need it soon. A 15-second scene can take about five business days from an approved script, and a 30-second story about seven to ten.

When a real camera is still better

  • Real testimonials. A real customer telling a real story should be filmed, not generated.
  • Your actual team at work, when the point is "these are the people who will show up at your door."
  • Close-up product demos where every detail of how it works matters. AI can show the product accurately; it should not invent what it does.

Many of the best spots mix the two: real footage of your people and product, with AI scenes for everything that would be expensive to film.

What to prepare before you start

  • Clear photos of your product from several angles, including labels and logos.
  • Photos of anyone who should appear, with their permission. Never celebrities or look-alikes.
  • Photos of your space if it should be recognizable.
  • One sentence on who the ad is for and what they should do after watching.

Where to run it

The same commercial can run on YouTube, Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok and streaming TV apps like Hulu, Peacock and Paramount+. Plan the formats up front so the vertical cut is designed, not cropped, and keep text inside each platform's safe zone so buttons don't cover it.

AI commercial or AI motion ad?

An AI commercial is a story with characters, locations and a plot, closer to a TV spot. An AI motion ad is graphic and typography-led, built for quick testing of many hooks. Brands often use commercials for awareness and motion ads to keep paid social fresh.

The bottom line

AI commercials are not a shortcut around craft; they move the craft from the set to the script and the references. If you approve the story, the cast and the product before anything is generated, the final cut has no surprises.
